After a year of establishment of the Mediterranean Union, assessing the status of this Union is an interesting subject. The first summit of the Mediterranean Union which was held in Paris in July 2008 was an extensive show-off diplomacy, but differences and lack of political consensus among the governments of Southern and Northern Mediterranean in particular with regard to developments in the Middle East weakened the initial optimism of European countries and made obvious the challenges and impediments for the EU Mediterranean policy. Due to this situation, the Mediterranean Union has not had any progress yet.
The present article aims to study, review and evaluate the status, challenges and prospects of this Union.
