The Independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia Autonomous ‎Republics and Kosovo: A Comparison

Document Type : Research Paper

Abstract
The outbreak of military conflict between Russia and Georgia resulted in President Medvedev’s order proclaiming the independence of republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia. Although the independence of these republics occurred after the recent crisis in Caucasus, actually it is the continuation of the process of the independence of Kosovo which was accomplished with direct assistance of the United States. The independence of Kosovo and these two republics should be seen under the context of recent tensions or the new Cold War between Russia and the United States. The new game derived from the rivalry between these two powers will have several implications in different domestic, regional and international levels.
