Transatlantic Relations in 21st Century: Integration or Divergence ‎

Document Type : Research Paper

Abstract
The new Europe and the United States are both the result of enlightenment era having common civilization and value foundations. The historical-civilizational depth of the transatlantic relations, however, does not mean that both sides have quite similar ontological bases. The political, social and geopolitical developments in recent centuries have had implications on strategic culture in both sides of the Atlantic. The US-Europe relations bear several layers which provide us with a prospect of civilization and value commonalities, the difference in the strategic weight and complexities of bilateral and multilateral connections. The present article analyzing the roots of divergence in two sides of the Atlantic and assessing the historical developments in this strategic part of the world from the Cold War era up to now, aims to draw the prospect of Transatlantic relations in the new century.
