The Prospect of Tension between Argentina and the UK over ‎Falkland/ Malvinas Islands

Document Type : Research Paper

Abstract
This article reviews the background of Anglo-Argentinean dispute over the Falkland/Malvinas islands. Thirty years after the Falkland war, Argentina-UK dispute over Falkland/Malvinas Islands is still alive. Before the anniversary of the Falkland war, the local authorities declared a decision to hold a referendum in March 2013 to determine the political status of this island. After victory in the Falkland war, the UK reinforced its military presence in this region re-emphasized that if necessary, this country is ready to defend its presence in the Falkland as a part of its territories overseas. The UK claims that to realize the will of Falkland inhabitants, the local government shall hold a referendum so that the will of the people to stay with Britain becomes evident.
On the other hand, Argentina, while emphasizing the necessity of political negotiations, declares that holding referendum under current situation is illegal and could be problematic.
