The Impact of the US and France Policies on Iran-Lebanon ‎Relations

Document Type : Research Paper

Abstract
After the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and establishment of Hezbollah which was influenced by the ideals and aspirations of the Islamic Revolution, the Iran-Lebanon ties developed into a new phase. The geopolitical status, connection with the occupied lands, being in forefront of resistance against the aggression and occupation of the Zionist regime, and cultural similarities and connectivity with the majority Shiites in the Lebanese society all contributed to the privileged position of Lebanon in foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Meanwhile, trans-regional powers, in particular the US and France have been relentlessly trying to extent their influence in this country. France and the United States perceive the influence of Iran in Lebanon as a threat to their aims and interests. Therefore, they oppose anything which contributes to development of Iran’s influence in Lebanon.
The present article will assess the aims and interests of the US and France in Lebanon, in particular during the 33-days war in the Summer of 2006, their wholehearted support for the Zionist aggression against Lebanon, and the impacts of this ill-intended policy on Iran-Lebanon relations.
