Iran-US Cultural and Social Relations during Johnson Presidency (1963-1969)
Document Type : Research Paper
Abstract
Expansion of cultural and social relations with abroad was a priority for Iranian government in 1960s. The present article studies Iran-United States cultural and social relations during the presidency of Lyndon Johnson. In the framework of cultural development which was a gate for political development, the United States, employing cultural instruments such as establishment of American schools and press activities in Iran, aimed to provoke its own desired developments in Iran. The social developments started with land reforms and continued with establishment of new political parties, introducing the new technologies and student exchanges. However, as this article concludes, since the US approach was colonial, the developments led to public unrest and paved the way for the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979.
